We would like to invite all who are interested to our second Equity discussion where we will explore how as a group we can become a more model anti-racist organization. We welcome your thoughts, inputs, and insights into this difficult conversation.
We will share some possible goals that were discussed from our first meeting and are open to other input, perspectives, and discussions.
In the meantime, if you're interested in reaching the below resources please contact the VP Phil Light to have them emailed to your directly. These are two of the smaller resources that he's found useful:
- "The GUT Club," which is a write-up of what our club's founder (Ivan Jirak) was doing to bridge racial divides in the 1970s. It's an interesting starting reference point.
- "Continuum on Becoming an Anti-Racist Multicultural Institution," which is a neat and tidy representation of how I'm coming to think about this topic.
A little nugget to contemplate on:
People aren't diverse,
groups are. Our group is a composition of our members, and the specific policies and habits that bind us together. We can change those policies and habits intentionally, but our membership—and the feelings those members have—will emerge as a consequence of those choices.
Thank you all for your interest in this! Looking forward to seeing you at our second virtual meeting.
