Mountaineering School
Explorers Club of Pittsburgh
- Who we are...
Dave Martin
Background
I joined the ECP in 1998 and took the ECP Rock School in 1999. A few years later a friend introduced
me to traditional climbing. From then on I was hooked! The mental & physical demands of leading
are very rewarding. Years later after watching many ECP slide shows of members traveling to remote
areas to climb mountains, I decided that I wanted to take the mountaineering school. It was such a
great experience; I took it a second year. There are so many things that I learned that have helped me
be comfortable in any environment. Whether you succeed in summiting or not you will always learn
something and that is what it is all about; continued learning to achieve future goals.
The school gave me the basics to set my future goals and gave me great confidence in alpine and mountain climbing. It has opened up a new world. I remember reading in “The Alpinist “about people climbing the Grand Teton and wondered if I could complete such a feat… and the answer is YES, done it (covered with snow & ice in July)! I have met and developed great friendships that will be long lasting. I will continue to explore the far off regions (Alaska & South America come to mind) to simply climb a mountain! And of course experience a new area or culture. I am dedicated to helping others to open up a new challenging way of life.
